Sourcing Case Study: Life Jacket Storage Bag Development & Production for Marine Applications
--Supply Chain Execution for a Leading European Boat Brand System
Published on 04/30/2025
Background
Deoboards has supported a number of supply chain projects related to European boat brands, including work connected to a leading yacht brand system established in 1884.
In this project, we developed and delivered life jacket storage bags designed for marine use.
These products are used as part of onboard storage systems, where space is limited. They need to provide efficient storage while maintaining durability, water resistance, and a clean, consistent appearance.

Challenges
During the project, several practical challenges needed to be addressed:
- Adapting the product to marine conditions (humidity, salt exposure, UV)
- Balancing storage capacity with limited onboard space
- Selecting materials that are durable, lightweight, and reasonably water resistant
- Ensuring metal parts and accessories resist corrosion
- Meeting a strict target cost
- Adjusting the design after initial sample approval
- Maintaining consistent quality during mass production
- Aligning the production timeline with the overall boat delivery schedule

Our Approach
To meet these requirements, we worked on both supply chain alignment and product execution:
- Selected materials suitable for marine environments, including resistance to moisture and UV exposure
- Improved key components such as zippers and metal parts to enhance corrosion resistance and durability
- Matched the project with the right factory based on capability and fit, not just factory size
- Optimized the cost structure through long term supplier relationships and multi project coordination
- Worked closely with the factory during key stages to confirm materials and production methods
- Set up clear communication and production processes to ensure stability during mass production
- Focused quality control on load bearing areas, stitching, and finishing details
- Conducted a final sample confirmation before mass production to ensure full alignment

Result
The project was completed successfully, with mass production delivered on schedule. The product is now on the market.
Client feedback highlighted:
- Stable and reliable product quality
- Attention to detail in finishing
- A good balance between functionality and appearance
In addition to meeting the original requirements, we also identified and improved several details that were not initially considered, making the overall product more complete and refined.

Key Learnings
This project reinforced several important points:
- A diverse and flexible supply chain is critical for handling complex projects
- Ongoing on site follow up and clear communication make a real difference in execution
- The right supplier fit matters more than simply choosing the largest factory
- Clear management and process control are essential for both quality and lead time
- We handle all inspections in house and do not rely on third party inspection companies. (In practice, when production does not fully meet requirements, there can be situations where external inspections are influenced by private incentives, allowing non compliant products to pass. Internal control helps ensure more consistent and reliable results.)
- Stable production, strict quality control, and smooth after sales support are what brand clients consistently value
Looking Ahead
Deoboards will continue to focus on reliable execution and delivery, supporting clients at different stages of product development and supply chain projects.
Our goal is simple: to be a long term, dependable partner who helps turn ideas into real, deliverable products.
Note: Client brand names are not disclosed for confidentiality reasons.
